Pain and Pleasure

pain pillsRecently experiencing a knee operation I have been reminded exactly how we change our behaviour to gain pleasure or avoid pain.  Let me explain.

My goal is, as you might imagine, is to fully recover from the operation, have strong muscles in my leg and to walk properly again.  To swim, to run around with my Grandchildren and to be independent.  All big motivators for me.

You might therefore think that carrying out the required physio therapy daily would be a sinch.  No way, it hurts!

So even though my goal is clear and I want it, the pain caused by exercise is sending a different message to my brain.  STOP in hurts!

I need to overcome this fear of pain to work towards my ultimate Goal.  I am doing this by visualising how it will be when I am healed, really feeling what it will be like to swim  in the Med next year, hearing my Grandchildren laugh and scream as I chase them around the park and taking myslef for a good long drive through beautiful countryside when I feel like it.

A good friend of mine also taught me the trick of exercising without exercising.  Again I visualise myself doing the exercise easily and pain free for about ten minutes before I start the real physical exercise.  It really works.

So if you are struggling with attaining your goal, carrying out your daily actions to get you there try visualising the future just as you want it.  It realy helps to block out the fear that will hold you back.
